Description

The Great Northern Warehouse at London Road Railway Station is a corn warehouse built in 1857 by T.C. Hine of Nottingham for the Great Northern Railway Company. It has been altered in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring ashlar and white brick dressings, and has a hipped sheet metal roof. It stands two storeys high and consists of 16 bays. The windows are cast-iron glazing bar casements.

The north front displays round-arched recessed bays with blank roundels above. The ground floor features four round-arched cart openings that span two bays, with wooden double doors, and small round-arched windows on either side. The other bays contain larger round-arched windows, while the fifth bay is blank. The south front has a similar arrangement of windows. Above, there are two wooden sack hoists on cast-iron brackets, and the remaining first-floor openings have large circular windows, most of which are blocked.

Inside, the ground floor is supported by cast-iron columns, while the first floor features iron suspension rods from the wooden roof, which support the floor without obstructing the space. Hine employed a similar structural system in the Adams Building on Stoney Street.
