Description
Belgrave House, built in 1776, is a substantial three-storey red brick house with five windows. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, each set within a flat brick arch. The roof is slate and hipped, with stucco bands and a modillion eaves cornice. A round-headed recess sits above the central windows, and the first floor features a pulvinated frieze and a small cornice. The front door is accessed through a doorcase with Tuscan half-columns and an open modillion pediment, topped with a traceried fanlight (although the fanlight glazing is later). There are two one-storey side wings, with doors located between two windows; these also feature round heads with tracery. A balustraded parapet runs along the top of the house and side wings, with ramped ends and three urns surmounting the brick piers on each side. Contemporary wrought iron railings run along the front, punctuated by stucco piers topped with balls.
The rear elevation has a central three-storey splayed bay, marked by a moulded brick cornice and five windows. The interior is relatively plain, featuring a staircase with plain balusters and a secondary staircase.
The house is part of a group of buildings including St Peter's Church, Belgrave Hall and Garden Walls, Stables and Monument to Edward Holdsworth, the Gateway and Railings to Belgrave Gardens, and Cross Corners in Thurcaston Road.
