Description
Saffron Hill Cemetery West Lodge, along with its attached walls, gate piers, and gates, is a cemetery lodge house built between 1928 and 1929 by E.P. Mawson. It is constructed from red brick and features a pyramidal plain tile roof with a central brick chimney. Designed in a Neo-Georgian style, it includes Crittall windows and has a square plan with two storeys.
The road-facing facade has a central round-headed window set within a full-height, slightly projecting arch. A raised band encircles the building, serving as a cill band. There are two-light windows on either side of the central window, with additional casements on the sides and rear.
To the right corner, there is a short section of wall with coping and a plinth. On the left side, there is a flat-roofed range that was formerly the registrar's office, which includes a door and a single-light window. Further left, a round-arched gateway features a wrought-iron pedestrian gate, and beyond that are the gate piers and gates. The tall brick piers are topped with stepped stone caps that are carved with cross motifs, and the elaborate wrought-iron carriage gates complete the entrance.
This well-designed cemetery lodge and its gates form a pair with the East Lodge and its gate piers and gates, and both lodges are part of a group with the cemetery chapel. Saffron Hill Cemetery is also listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at grade II.
