Description
The building is a cemetery lodge house built between 1928 and 1929, designed by EP Mawson. It is part of Saffron Hill Cemetery and forms a group with the West Lodge, gatepiers and gates, and the cemetery chapel. The lodge house is constructed of red brick with a pyramidal roof covered in plain tiles, and a central brick stack. It is in a Neo-Georgian style, featuring Crittall windows. The building has a square plan and two storeys. The road-facing facade has a central round-headed window within a full-height, slightly projecting arch. A raised band acts as the cill band around the building’s exterior. There are two-light windows on either side of the central window at ground level, and further casement windows to the sides and rear. A section of brick wall with coping and a plinth is attached to the left side. To the right, facing the gates, is a round-arched doorway with a door featuring ornamental hinges. Attached further to the right is a section of wall with a round-arched gateway and a wrought-iron pedestrian gate. Tall brick gatepiers are topped with stepped stone caps carved with cross motifs, and are flanked by elaborate wrought-iron carriage gates. Saffron Hill Cemetery is included on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at group value, Grade II.
