Description

Saffron Hill Cemetery Chapel is a cemetery chapel ensemble built between 1928 and 1929 by architect E.P. Mawson. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and has a plain tile roof, designed in a Byzantine style. The chapel is located to the right, with a campanile on the left and service areas in between, all featuring open arcades at the front. The chapel has a gable front with clustered pilasters at the corners and a tall three-light window in the center. There are pseudo aisles on both sides; the right side has an open arcade with two pairs of entrance doors leading into the chapel, while the left side contains service areas with an arcade in front. Above the aisles are two-light clerestory windows.

The base of the campanile features a stone frontispiece and an entrance with a round arch supported by simple attached columns, leading to double doors. An inscription above reads 'NON OMNIS MORIAR'. The campanile itself has corner pilasters extending to the top stage, which includes two-light bell openings, and is topped with a hipped pyramidal roof with low stacks at the rear corners. There is an additional arcade to the left with more services behind it. The rear of the chapel mirrors the front with similar arcades and a round-arched entrance at the base of the campanile, leading to a polygonal apse at the end of the chapel.

Inside the chapel, a tall arch leads to the apse, and the roof features a tie beam truss supported by stone corbels. This carefully designed ensemble balances the chapel with the campanile, while the arcades provide shelter for mourners and flowers. The cemetery was laid out by landscape architect Thomas Mawson, the architect's father, and documents in the Mawson archive indicate that contemporary cemetery design in the USA was consulted. The chapel forms a group with the East and West Lodges and attached gates. Saffron Hill Cemetery is also listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at grade II.
