Description

The Westcotes Maternity Hospital, along with the associated Lodge and Stables to the southeast, dates to approximately 1888 and was designed by the architect Teulon. The hospital is constructed of purple brick with blue brick banding, featuring stone dressings and slate roofs. It is built in a Gothic style with an irregular plan and elevations. The main east elevation, which overlooks a terrace, is dominated by a large, two-storey splayed bay with stone mullion and transom windows featuring four-centred arch lights. This bay is topped with a pyramidal roof. A central gothic window with tracery is set within a gable, which includes a ball finial and a corbelled chimney to one side. Beneath it is a three-light four-centred arch window and a four-centred arch doorway. To the left is a gable with a chimney stack rising through it. The long north elevation is also irregular. On the west side is a three-storey kitchen wing with a bellcote surmounted by a bell-shaped dome and an ornate wind vane.

The contemporary Lodge, also by Teulon, is built of purple brick with blue brick banding and has stone mullion windows and a slate roof with gable ends. It has a two-storey, L-shaped plan, and includes a stone single-storey splayed bay facing the road. The stables, also contemporary, are of purple brick with blue brick banding, a slate roof with gabled ends, and are one storey high with an attic. The right side features a four-centred stone arch carriage entrance with a stone left doorway in a gable, topped with an ornate weathervane. To the left of the carriage entrance are modern garage doors.
