Description
The war memorial is located in the churchyard to the north of St Giles' Church in Normanton, Derby. It is constructed from ashlar sandstone and features a modified Celtic cross, with angular rather than curved linking sections. The tapered rectangular shaft has a low socket adorned with miniature gables, angle buttresses, and a carved shield on its north face, topped by a cross. The shaft rises from a deep chamfered base stone, which has the inscription 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919' on its north face. This base stone is set on a stepped plinth, with the upper step made of large ashlar blocks that list the names of seventy-eight fallen soldiers in alphabetical order on each of the four faces.
