Description

The Grain Warehouse, located to the south of the Town Goods Shed in St Mary's Goods Yard, was built between 1861 and 1862. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar and red brick dressings, topped with slate roofs featuring dentilated brick eaves and ashlar coped gables, along with a single gable brick stack. The east and west facades are identical, each consisting of five bays with a recessed central bay and end bays. The central window is round-headed with a rusticated ashlar head, flanked by doorways that each have double plank doors under segmental heads with rusticated ashlar heads. These are further flanked by round-headed windows with rusticated ashlar heads. Above, there is a single window flanked by three-light windows, which are in turn flanked by single windows, all featuring a continuous lintel drip mould. Above this, there is another single window flanked by two-light windows and single windows. At the top, a central blind window is flanked by pairs of round-headed windows, which are in turn flanked by blind windows. Each of the projecting bays is capped with a shallow pediment. Inside, the warehouse retains wooden flooring supported by cast iron columns, and various internal hoists are still intact. This building was likely designed for the Midland Railway by Thompson and Fryer.
