Description
This group of nine grave tablets, located approximately 15 meters east of the east end of the Church of St. Peter, dates from around 1814 to 1818. These ashlar memorials commemorate a group of Benedictine Nuns. The tablet on the left is inscribed with "Emilia Monteiro, Born at Lisbon Died July 3rd 1816 Aged 15." The other tablets feature initials only, along with "O.S.B."—the initials of the order—followed by dates of death and the letters "R.I.P." Each tablet is rectangular with curved corners and displays a Maltese cross in relief.
These graves belong to a group of Benedictine Nuns who left France on October 17, 1792. They lived at Heath Old Hall from 1811 to 1821, where there were approximately 42 Nuns, along with novices, pupils, servants, and outdoor employees, totaling around 80 people. The names of all the Nuns are recorded in the parish register.
