Description

The Old School House is an endowment school and attached Master's house, now a residential property, dating from around 1660 with alterations made around 1751 when the schoolmaster's house was added. The building is constructed of large, well-coursed gritstone, with the addition being punch-dressed, and features a stone-slate roof. The single-storey school section has a two-storey master's cottage. It has quoins and a three-bay facade with a central doorway that has double tie-stone jambs and a deep Tudor-arched lintel with a chamfered surround. On either side of the doorway are three-light double-chamfered mullioned-and-transomed windows. The gables are coped with kneelers.

To the right, the Master's house has a doorway with a monolithic lintel to the left of a window that also has a monolithic lintel and a projecting sill, featuring small-paned glazing and a smaller window above. At the rear, there is a chamfered cross-window to the left of two sash windows, which have lintels and projecting sills. The left-hand return, facing the Common, has a large 20-pane sash window with raised plain-stone surrounds.

Inside, the building has been altered for use as a dwelling. One pane of glass is scratched with the name "Mary Wynn 1751". The interior features three king-post trusses with angle-struts.

The foundation was endowed by Lady Bolles of Heath Old Hall, who provided £25.12.6 annually for a schoolmaster and usher at the "lately built school in Heath."
