Description

This is an early 19th century terrace of three storeys and basements, extending along St John’s Square and including No. 15 Wentworth Street. The terrace is higher on the left-hand side due to the sloping hillside. The central five-bay section slightly projects and is topped by a pediment; the outer sections also project. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, incorporating a cornice, pediment coping, a ground-floor band, window architraves in the central section, and cornices to the ground-floor windows. The sash windows, approximately half of which retain their original glazing bars, have gauged flat brick arches and stone cills. A blank round panel is located in the pediment. The entrances have five or six panel doors, with patterned oblong fanlights. The doorcases are varied, including classical designs, simple architraves, later 19th or early 20th century additions, and some without any doorcase. No. 14 and Rochford Home have later bay windows, both square and canted. Wrought-iron hand and arm railings are present. No. 22 features good contemporary rear extensions, and there are long, round-arched staircase windows to the rear of the building.
