Description

The South Stable Block, along with an attached wall featuring a mounting block and gate piers, is a structure dating from around 1810, designed by Thomas Taylor for Godfrey W. Wentworth. Originally built as stables, it now serves as accommodation for a residential college. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and ashlar, with the roof not visible. It faces the North Stable Block across a courtyard.

The stable block is two stories high with an 11-bay symmetrical facade. It has a plinth, and the central three bays, made of ashlar, project slightly and feature semicircular arches that have been converted into windows, with the voussoirs aligned to the stone courses. The flanking bays contain doorways with glazed overlights and three 16-pane sash windows, each with lintels and sills. The facade is finished with a frieze, cornice, and blocking course.

To the right of the stable block, there is a wall that ends in a gate pier, which exhibits banded rustication and has a curved ashlar coping. The mounting block at the front consists of a double flight of five stone steps that follow the curve of the wall, with an arched dog-kennel situated underneath.
