Description

SOUTH HIENDLEY CHURCH LANE SE31SE (west side) Felkirk 4/69 Watson tomb chest 12 - metres south of tower of Church of St. Peter. GV II

Tomb chest. Early C18. Commemorates Anne, wife of John Watson of Hodroyd (d.1735). Sandstone. Moulded base, fluted corner pilasters and rusticated central pilasters lid with moulded rim, fielded shouldered panel, sunk spandrels with raised carving depicting primitive angel heads with crossed wings, crossed bones, and flowers. Full-length inscription in elegant lettering, with verse and several additions: (i) Anne, daughter of John and Anne. (d.1725) aged 51(?) weeks; (ii) the above John (d.1756), with eulogy; (iii) Samuel, son of Joseph and Ann Watson (d.1789) aged 13; and (iv) Sarah, 1st wife of "the above said Samuel" (?-sic) (d.1779).
