Description

SE3212 and SE3213 WOOLLEY WOOLLEY PARK

7/143 Pair of urns on the south terrace walk in the formal garden, approx. 50m south of fountain at Woolley Hall

GV II

Pair of urns. Early-mid C19. Carved sandstone. Each has square plinth, moulded foot surmounted by bell-shaped urn with banded decoration, tulip to base, flower head to top. Cap has gadrooned sun-ray pattern with central sunken recess.

A plan of 1814 by Watson Pritchet for a lodge and gateway at Woolley Park illustrates 2 urns on the gatepiers identical with these in the garden (Manuscript in Brotherton Library, Leeds University). It is possible they were made but discarded when the full plan of the lodge was not executed and originate from that source.
