Description
The terrace at 2-9 St John’s Square is a substantial group of early to mid-19th century houses with basements. The terrace rises in height towards the north end, where the ground slopes downwards. It presents a symmetrical facade with twelve windows on either side of a slightly projecting central section, which features five windows and a pediment. The building is constructed of red brick with a stone cornice and pediment coping, along with ground floor and first floor sill bands. The basement is of squared, cut stone. The windows are sash windows, some with replaced glazing bars, and have stone sills. Wrought iron balconies are present on the first floor. Steps lead to six-panel doors, each with a patterned oblong fanlight above. Wrought iron hand and area railings are also present. Numbers 5 and 9 have pedimented classical doorcases, number 7 has an early 20th century Jacobean doorcase, and number 6 has a shallow, prostyle pedimented porch.
