Description
The Potter Monument, located 3 metres south of the first bay of the chapel of the Church of All Saints, is a monumental slab dating from around 1694. It commemorates John Potter, who died in 1694. The monument is made of sandstone and has a rectangular shape with a roll-moulded border. The upper half features a carved achievement of arms, which includes a shield displaying three sunk bulls' heads, surrounded by elaborate foliation. The lower border is adorned with arcades and scrolls. In the lower half of the monument, an inscription in cursive script identifies John Potter as "Son of John Potter Senr of Munkroad who marryed Mary the Daughter of Henry Holgate of Grimethorpe Gent . . .". Below this inscription, there is a sunk band with large raised lettering that reads "16:IF.94", and beneath it, the inscription "Etaus Suae 50" is displayed.
