Description
No 1 Northfield Lane is a house dated 1739, constructed from coursed squared rubble with quoins and topped with a stone slate roof. It features a two-cell end-lobby entrance plan and stands two storeys high with two bays. The doorway is located to the left and has an inscribed lintel that reads "C R R 1739" along with an incised sundial. The windows have been altered or added later, and there is a brick stack on the left gable as well as one at the centre of the ridge. The rear of the house has additional structures and altered windows, while the left return shows remnants of a chamfered single light. Inside, the house has stop-chamfered beams and a fireplace in each room, with the left room featuring a segmental head and a broad chamfered surround. The original staircase is located at the rear, complete with a splat baluster landing rail. This house is noted to have been the residence of Robert Carr, who was the father of the architect John Carr.
