Description

Lumb House is a house located on Back Lane, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century and mid-20th century. It is constructed of large coursed gritstone and features a red-tile roof from the 20th century. The building has two storeys and follows a three-room, hall-and-cross-wing plan.

On the ground floor, there are double-chamfered mullioned windows, most of which have been altered with lowered sills and more widely spaced mullions. The first cell originally had a five-light window and a two-light fire-window, along with a three-light flat-faced mullioned window on the first floor. The second cell features a former twelve-light mullioned-and-transomed window that has been partly blocked and altered into two wide lights, with a three-light window above it. There is also a Tudor-arched doorway with composite jambs and a moulded surround, which includes cyma, step, roll, and step details.

Additional architectural features include a stringcourse and gutter brackets. The wing of the house breaks forward and has a six-light window that has been altered to three wide lights, complete with a cyma-moulded hoodmould. Above this, a similar double-chamfered window has been modified to a wide window with a concrete lintel. The rear of the wing contains a five-light double-chamfered mullioned window, which is missing a mullion, along with a four-light window above it. The right-hand return of the wing showcases a fine external stack with offsets and a diamond-set flue, topped with a cyma-moulded cornice, while another lateral brick stack is also present. The interior of the house was completely remodelled in the mid-20th century.
