Description
The Alexander Memorial, located approximately 14 metres south of the Church of St Mark, was built around 1862 by J Leach of Becket Street. This memorial primarily commemorates William Alexander, who died in 1862. It is constructed of ashlar and features a chamfered base, a plinth with recessed panels, and a moulded base supporting a square-section column. On the east side of the column, there is a sculpted portrait head in deep relief, with an inscription below.
Originally, a deep oversailing cornice above the column supported carved figures, including a standing female figure carrying a baby and comforting a kneeling girl, flanked by mournful seated figures. The memorial also honors William Alexander's son, Anthony, who died in 1835; his daughter, Ann, who died in 1865; and his wife, Elizabeth, who died in 1887. William Alexander was a saddler, born in 1804, and was a prominent member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, serving as Grand Master of the district in 1836 and Grand Master of the Order in 1858, which had a membership of 400,000.
