Description
The remains of the facade to what is likely the burial vaults of the Leeds General Cemetery, now known as St George's Fields, date from 1832 to 1834 and were designed by John Clark. The structure is made of ashlar and gritstone, measuring approximately 10 meters long and 2 meters high. It features six rusticated flat arches behind pilasters that support an entablature and cornice, with a two-course parapet above. The arches are currently blocked. Landscaping embankments at each end obscure the facade, which was originally much longer. Baine's map of Leeds from 1834 depicts this facade with 48 openings or recesses and large terminals with statues. The 1847 Ordnance Survey map shows 'Arcade Vaults' with 32 bays, indicating that the central section was built out and buttressed.
