Description
The Crowther Memorial, located approximately 25 metres north of the Church of St Mark, was erected around 1861 in memory of George Johnston Crowther. Constructed from ashlar and carved stone, it features a deep square base and plinth with an inscription on the south side. Above this, a tall Ionic column supports a square gadrooned urn finial. The inscription reads: 'GEORGE JOHNSTON CROWTHER/ of the Chemical Works Woodhouse/ who died SEPT 16TH 1861/ AGED 48 YEARS/ He was useful without being conspicuous;/ and died respected and regretted by all/ who knew him'.
