Description
Nos 20 and 22 Low Town is a building that has been converted into two shops with an art gallery above, which continues over Nos 1 and 2 Booth's Yard. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with shop fronts added around 1880. The structure is made of thin coursed sandstone and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys tall with an attic and features two first-floor windows. The building occupies a corner site and has a gable facing the street.
There is a wide doorway with monolithic jambs set in a chamfered angle at No 22. To the left, there are two separate shop windows with original wooden surrounds that include fluted pilasters, consoles, and cornices. The left-hand window has an integral doorway for No 20. Above these, there are two 2-light flat-faced mullion windows with 4-pane sashes. At the apex of the coped gable, there is an arched window with a keystone and impost blocks. The building has a central ridge stack and an additional stack on the rear gable.
The right-hand return has two bays; the first bay features a shop window with a sash above in a raised surround, while the second bay has a former doorway that has been altered to a window, with a single-light window above retaining a 12-pane sash. The building also has paired moulded gutter brackets. At the time of the resurvey, it was noted to be in a state of poor repair.
