Description
The gatepiers, quadrant walls, railings, and gates at Lofthouse Lodge date from around 1755 and are likely designed by John Carr for Edward Lascelles, the 1st Earl of Harewood. Constructed from ashlar and cast- and wrought-iron, the structure features a pair of main gatepiers and a pair of subsidiary gatepiers, which are connected by curving quadrant walls that end in small piers.
The main gatepiers exhibit channelled rustication, a Doric entablature, a cyma-moulded cornice, and a frieze adorned with paterae. They also have triangular casement-moulded pediments, with the cornice extending around the sides. The lower flanking piers are similarly designed, featuring channelled rustication, a Doric entablature, and triangular pediments. The gates and railings are characterized by simple stick bars that end in obelisk finials. The hinges include a standard and gun-barrel turned rod topped with an urn finial.
The flanking quadrant walls are low, topped with moulded ashlar coping and railings, where every 15th bar serves as a standard. These walls culminate in square low piers that have projecting square cornices and slightly domed caps. This entrance provided the main access to Harewood House in the 18th century.
