Description
The building is a medieval crossbase that serves as a war memorial, located in Barwick in Elmet and Scholes. The crossbase is medieval in origin and is topped by a memorial established in 1919. It features a dressed freestone base and a limestone memorial. The crossbase is square in shape and has four diminishing steps. The war memorial consists of a tall cross with a plinth, a tapering shaft, and a wheel-head cross that is adorned with Celtic style interlace carving. On the south face of the shaft and plinth, there are three bronze plaques; the middle plaque commemorates the restoration of the cross in 1919 as a war memorial, while the plaque above lists the names of the fallen, and the plaque below includes the names of those who fell in the 1939-45 War. The memorial is prominently situated in the center of the village, at the head of the main street, next to the village maypole.
