Description
This is an early 19th-century house, located on the west side of Main Street in Barwick, and incorporating the right-hand bay of the neighbouring property at number 46. The house is built of rendered walls and has a stone slate roof. It has four bays arranged over two storeys. The doorway, situated in the third bay, features tall, monolithic jambs and a modillioned cornice, with a panelled surround and an overlight that is glazed as a fanlight. Sixteen-pane sash windows are set within flush wood architraves and have projecting sills. Widely spaced gutter brackets are also present. Gable stacks rise from the roof, along with one ridge stack.
The rear elevation has two facing gables, with the left-hand gable projecting further. This gable has sash windows with flush wood architraves on both floors. A recessed section features a doorway, a stair window above, and a segmental bow window with curved glazed sashes, accompanied by a sash window above.
Inside, the doorway opens into a stairhall containing a dog-leg closed string staircase with turned newels, a ramped handrail, and finely-turned balusters. Doorways on either side of the stairhall have architraves and six-panel doors with raised-and-fielded panels.
Elmwood House is a prominent building within Main Street.
