Description
92 and 93 Briggate is a shop that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates back to around 1600, was refronted around 1700 and 1800, and was largely rebuilt between 1924 and 1926. The rebuilding was designed by WH Beevers and AE Dixon of Leeds for William Greenwood, who operated a jewellers shop and tea rooms there. The building features a timber-framed and tiled facade, likely with a steel frame, and has a roof that is not visible.
It stands four storeys high and has three bays in a Classical style. The ground floor has a late 20th-century shop window, while the first and second floors feature recessed windows with two, three, and two lights, adorned with leaded panes and square panels that include circles and acanthus motifs. The flanking pilasters display Classical designs, including acanthus leaves and guttae, and there is a raised plaque below a dentilled eaves cornice featuring lion masks. The third floor has paired central windows beneath a triangular pediment, with plaques on the outer bays and panels that have raised sunflowers topped with urns.
Inside, the first-floor north party wall revealed timber-framing during building work in 1995, although it has since been covered over. Approximately 10 meters by 2 meters of what is presumed to be a merchant's house from around 1700 remains, along with evidence of a jettied gable facing Briggate. The building was occupied by William Greenwood, jewellers, from 1920 to 1940.
