Description

The Hepworth Memorial, located approximately 23 metres east of the Church of St Mark, was erected in 1839 to commemorate John Hepworth and his family. This memorial is constructed from ashlar and features a rectangular podium with panelled angled pilasters. It has four-centred arched inscribed side panels, a cornice adorned with acanthus leaf decoration and antefixae, and a swept top that is surmounted by a funerary urn.

On the eastern face of the memorial, there is an inscription that honors John Hepworth, describing him as an active and useful member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. It notes his eight years of service as Secretary of the Order and highlights his talents, spirit of benevolence, and the respect he earned from those who knew him. The inscription also mentions his personal qualities as a husband, father, and friend, and states that he died suddenly on October 6th, 1839, at the age of 31. The memorial was erected by members of the Order to acknowledge his many excellent qualities and to encourage others to follow his example. Additionally, it commemorates his wife, who passed away in 1889, and other family members.
