Description
The parterre located to the west of Bramham Park House dates from the early 18th century and is constructed from magnesian limestone. It measures approximately 70 metres by 35 metres and is set on ground that gradually rises away from the house. The longer side walls are gently sloped upwards towards the far end, which features a wide bow with a fountain at its center.
The side and end walls include a plinth and raised vermiculated panels. The end wall has coved niches in the straight outer sections and rusticated pilasters at each end of the bow. A dragon's mouth spout is positioned over a rocky cascade in the center, and the coping of this structure supports six fluted urns, each adorned with carved ramshead handles.
At the inner end of each side wall stands a large, heavily-carved pillar, approximately one metre square and four metres high. Each pillar consists of a pedestal with a vermiculated panel on each side, topped by a short pillar embraced by five-fingered volutes, and features a prominent moulded entablature crowned with a swan-neck pediment. This parterre may have been designed by John Wood of Bath and was noted in a survey of the gardens by Detmar Blow around 1907, where it was referred to as the "sundial garden."
