Description
This building is a barn, byres, stables, and granary constructed in 1760 by master mason James Lapish for Robert Midgley. It is made of coursed squared gritstone and has a stone slate roof, featuring seven bays and quoins. On the west side, there is a large arched entrance with a keyblock, two tiers of slit vents, inserted square windows at ground level, and two square hay doors above. The east side has a similar arch and projecting ends, with external stone steps leading to the granary above the stables. There are blocked doorways at the bottom of the steps and near the top, along with a blocked square opening and small square vents or put-log holes. The south end has two stable doors with plain lintels, a square window between them, and two additional windows above. Inside, the barn features a massive roof structure supported by six tall king-post trusses, which include middle and lower braces and queen posts, as well as some original partitioning. This barn is part of the Cookridge Hall estate and is an important well-documented survival, related to Herd Farmhouse.
