Description
Herd Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1760 for Robert Midgley, who was the steward to the Cookridge Hall estate. It is constructed from coursed stone and features plain stone quoins and window surrounds. The stone slate roof has coped gable ends with kneelers and shaped stone eaves brackets. The building has two storeys with garrets and cellars, and it is designed with three windows. The windows include two-light sliding casements with glazing bars, and there is a single light window in the center of the first floor. Each gable has a small blocked window. The central entrance door is topped with a narrow overlight. There are end stacks, with the right stack made of stone and the left stack rebuilt in rendered brick.
Inside, the entrance leads into a narrow hall that has a segmental arch leading to the staircase, with a cellar door on the right. The staircase rises in straight flights to the attic storey, featuring shallow treads supported by turned column balusters that hold the handrail. The farmhouse has a well-documented history, with records from Cookridge Hall detailing the construction of the square, arch-roofed cellar that includes a stone table. The master mason James Lapish is noted for carving the 16 corbels for the guttering. This farmhouse is considered an important survival from its period.
