Description

Numbers 1-4 Newton Grove comprise a terrace of four houses built between 1860 and 1870. The houses are constructed of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar detailing, and have a slate roof. They stand three storeys high over a basement, with each house originally containing three first-floor windows. Number 1, on the left-hand side, was later divided into two properties to the left of the main entrance.

Numbers 1, 2, and 3 each feature stone steps leading up to a porch supported by Tuscan columns, and topped by an entablature, cornice, and blocking course. A canted bay window, designed in a similar style, is situated to the right. The first- and second-floor windows have moulded architraves, although frames – likely originally 4-pane sashes – have been replaced. Stone gutter brackets are present, and stone stacks project forward of the ridge between the properties. Number 4, the rightmost house, has stone steps with an original wrought-iron handrail featuring moulded standards, leading to a four-panel door and fanlight set within a keyed round arch. The door is surrounded by a moulded doorcase with large console brackets supporting a cornice. Two sashes with eight uneven panes are located to the left, while the first and second floors have 4-pane sashes, all set within segmental-arched architraves with keystones and sill brackets.

The interiors of the houses have not been inspected. The first recorded occupants in a directory date from 1870 and included a Reverend, an oil merchant, a leather manufacturer, and an engineer. Number 1 was likely subdivided when the adjoining block of shops at 168-176 Chapeltown Road was constructed in 1891.
