Description

The Victoria Works Range is part of a flax mill complex built around 1835 to 1838 for W.B. Holdsworth. It is constructed of red brick in English bond with a slate roof and stone gable copings featuring turned-back kneelers. The building is rectangular, positioned at a right angle to the street, measuring 14 bays long and 3 bays wide. It has a slightly projecting stair and toilet block on the left side of the street gable, and a low engine house projection with a chimney at the rear (north) end. The central doorway on the street gable has a stone lintel but has been reduced to a window. To the left, there is a tier of loading doors that have also been converted to windows, while the center and right sections feature segmental brick-arched windows, with the far right being blocked. The ground floor has inverted brick arches below the windows, and there are small rectangular windows in the stair block.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is said to contain a cast-iron frame with cylindrical columns that support inverted T-beams and a fireproof floor construction. Historically, Holdsworth operated a mill at Lands Court before relocating to this site, likely owned by George Goodman, around 1835. By 1840, there were already buildings on this site. By 1862, the workforce had grown to 700 employees, and by 1888, the buildings were occupied by Titley and Co from Water Lane. The site was in multiple occupation by the early 20th century.
