Description

This is a stable and coach house, dating to 1893 and designed by Francis Bedford for James Bedford. Originally part of Arncliffe, it has been converted into garages and a flat. The building is constructed of red brick with timber framing to the first floor and a rendered finish. It has a sandstone slab roof. The architectural style is Half-timbered Vernacular Revival.

The building is two storeys and comprises two bays, with the left bay projecting as a cross wing. The cross wing has a timber post supporting the upper floor and inset garage doors to the left. A stable door is beneath a porch, a two-light window and further door are at first-floor level centrally, and garage doors are to the right. The first floor has three paired casement windows to the left, supported by brackets, with a projecting boarded gable. A small square casement window and a five-light mullioned window are to the right. Deep eaves and a tall brick stack are at the rear centre.

The right return features an external timber staircase with pitched brick panels, apparently decorative as the first-floor window lacks a corresponding doorway. A jettied gable is also present.

The ground-floor stables on the left side of the building retain original tiles and deal boards lining the walls, although the stalls have been removed.
