Description
Nos. 10-20 on Duncan Street are shops, offices, and a warehouse built in 1882, designed by Thomas Ambler for William Tunstall. The building features brick construction with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It stands four storeys high and has seven bays, with a symmetrical facade that includes a central oriel window on the first floor flanked by narrow lights. The other bays have paired windows, with segmental arches on the second floor.
The ground floor has a central carriage entrance, partially filled by a 20th-century shop unit, but retains its original shop divisions with pilasters and decorative capitals. Notable decorative stonework includes rusticated pilasters, moulded bands at each floor level, architraves, and console brackets at the eaves. Balustrades flank the city coat of arms above the eaves, which is topped with a curved roof and pediments at each end. The building originally housed a large warehouse above the first-floor offices, with access through one of the shops and additional rooms for receiving goods and a hoist at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
