Description
73-77 The Square is a row of six estate workers' cottages, now comprising five dwellings, built in the late 18th century, likely designed by John Carr for Edwin Lascelles, the 1st Lord Harewood. The cottages are constructed from punch-dressed stone and feature a stone slate roof. They are two storeys high with a symmetrical 12-bay facade, including two projecting wings with quoined angles. The doorways located in bays 3, 5, and 8 have monolithic lintels and overlights set in chamfered surrounds. The cottages have 16-pane sash windows, although the glazing has been mainly altered, with plain stone surrounds that project to the ground floor. An eaves band runs along the top, and the wings have hipped roofs, each with a ridge stack. The main range has three ashlar ridge stacks. The left-hand return features three bays with a central doorway; the third bay, which was formerly a window, has been broken through to form a doorway (No 78) that is now blocked and part of No 77. The windows on the return match those on the front.
