Description
Sphinx Gates are a pair of gate piers and gates located approximately 137 meters east of the barn in Temple Newsam Park, built around 1760 by Lancelot Brown. The gate piers feature a rusticated stone band with a key motif, a deep frieze adorned with a drape, and a moulded cornice topped with a sphinx. The gates themselves are heavy plain iron, designed by Lord Burlington and published in 1738.
