Description
The barn at Temple Newsam, located to the north-east of the stables, dates from the late 17th century and features a datestone from 1744, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with a stone plinth, quoins, kneelers, and verges, topped with a stone slate roof that has gable ends, stone coping, and a ball finial. The barn has a large elliptical-headed entrance at its center and triangular vents. A stone tablet on the south gable end is inscribed with '1744' and has a cornice above it. Attached at right angles to the north end on the east side is a lower, two-storey cart/shelter shed and stable wing from the late 18th century, which is also made of brick and has a stone slate roof with segmental-arched openings. There are later outbuildings attached at the east end.
Inside, the barn consists of 12 bays with alternate king-post and collar-beam trusses. A timber wall-plate runs along the tops of the walls, which have internal buttresses supporting the king-post tie beams. Above these tie beams, the king-posts feature side braces to the principal rafters and braces to the ridge, along with short queen-posts on each side. A tie beam near the north end of the building is carved with the date 'CD 1691111'. The barn has three tiers of trenched purlins and is believed to be the same structure depicted in an engraving by J Kip from 1702.
