Description

A row of 11 estate worker's cottages, now converted into 10 dwellings, was built in the mid-to-late 18th century by John Carr for Edwin Lascelles, 1st Lord Harewood. The cottages are constructed of punch-dressed herringbone-tooled stone, with hammer-dressed stone to the sides and rear, and have a stone slate roof. They are arranged in an L-shape and comprise 12 bays along The Avenue and 14 bays along Harrogate Road. The design includes a plinth and quoins. Each cottage originally had a doorway with an overlight, monolithic jambs on plinths, a chamfered surround, and a window to one side, with smaller square windows above. All windows originally had plain-stone surrounds and projecting sills. Nos 18, 19, 23, 24, and 25 along Harrogate Road, and No 26 have paired doorways. No 25 retains small-pane Yorkshire sash windows on both floors, while most other windows have been altered to casements. A single-storey link is attached to No 17, connecting it with No 16. This link was originally the estate office and features a 12-pane sash window with an overlight and stone architrave, alongside ashlar coping. A cyma-moulded ashlar gutter has been replaced with a wooden gutter on metal brackets. The roof is hipped with three ashlar ridge stacks to each range. The estate office link was formerly connected to the estate manager’s house (No 16) and, together with Nos 82-88 The Avenue, forms a T-plan at the end of the Avenue, leading to the main entrance of Harewood House. The cottages are part of Carr's original model village.
