Description
Sir John Lewis's Cottages, numbers 1-11, are a row of eleven almshouses founded in the mid-17th century by Sir John Lewis. The cottages have been altered and restored, with a 20th-century addition. They are constructed from magnesian limestone blocks and feature a stone slate roof. The buildings have a linear single-depth plan, with a modern rear outshut. Each cottage is two storeys high and consists of one bay. They have a plinth and a string course, with doorways that are coupled together, except for the first doorway on the left end. All doorways have chamfered surrounds and panelled doors. Each cottage features one two-light chamfered mullion window on each floor, with the ground floor windows slightly recessed and the upper floor windows flush, all of which have been restored. There are rebuilt stone chimneys, one at each gable and five along the ridge. The gables are topped with stone coping and kneelers, but the masonry below indicates the outline of a previously steeper roof. The rear of the cottages is now of less interest, and the interior has not been inspected.
