Description

The Old School is a school building constructed around 1870, with minor alterations made in the 20th century. It is built from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressing and features stone slate roofs. The structure has a single tall brick chimney stack and quoins, and is designed in an L-plan with a single storey raised over a deep basement.

The street facade includes a single basement doorway with a segmental head, accompanied by an external stone staircase. Above this, there is a large window featuring a 4-light stone mullion and transomed window, set under a segmental relieving arch. At the apex of the gable, an ashlar quatre-foil is present, with ashlar coping, a cross finial, and kneelers. To the left, there is a square bellcote that is corbelled out from the corner, which has 4-centre arched openings on each face, topped with battlements and a square ashlar dome with a finial.

The west front includes a doorway leading to a boiler house and store, with a plank door to the left and a window to the right under a single segmental lintel. An external staircase rises to the upper floor. The rear section of the building, which is situated on higher ground, has a small projecting gabled wing with a single tall window. The north front features a single 3-light stone mullion and transom window, along with two tiny narrow lights in the apex of the gable. The east front has three 3-light ashlar mullion windows on the upper floor, as well as a later external square brick chimney stack.

The interiors are quite plain, although the main school room retains its original roof with exposed roof trusses, a dado rail, and original paneled and plank doors. This building was established as a new schoolroom for the Boys School next door, which was founded by Lady Betty Hastings.
