Description
Holly Cottage, now two dwellings, is probably of the later 17th century with an addition and alteration in the early 18th century, and has been subsequently altered. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with parts rendered, and has a stone slate roof. The building has a T-shaped plan; No. 3 forms a gabled cross-wing at the left end of No. 5 and likely incorporates the original first bay of that house. No. 5 now comprises two bays with a central lobby-entry. The left part (No. 5) has a doorway in line with a ridge chimney at the junction of the bays, with a chamfered Tudor-arched surround. Above the door is a blocked single-light window, and there are two recessed mullioned windows on each floor; to the left are six lights at ground floor (lacking the first and fourth mullions) and four above, and to the right are four lights at ground floor and three above. The right-hand gable has an inserted door and window at ground floor, a small horizontal window at first floor, and a blocked attic window. Internally, the first bay now has a longitudinal beam, which is boxed in.
The projecting gable of the wing (No. 3) is rendered and has two 16-pane sash windows on each floor, with exposed window boxes. The gable has stone coping with kneelers and a chimney. The return wall, of thin sandstone rubble, has four bays, with the rear half likely formerly stables. A gabled porch is centrally placed, and remains of mullioned windows are visible at first floor to the right, including one of four lights lacking two mullions, and one of three lights lacking both and lengthened downwards. Internally, the front room has a large chamfered beam, jointed to a continuation in the room behind - the latter potentially formerly lateral to the main axis of the original building.
