Description
A farmhouse, now divided into two dwellings, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier and altered subsequently. The building is constructed of stone with roughcast rendering, and has a stone slate roof. It is arranged in an L-shape, with a main linear three-unit range and a rear outshut (part of No.4), accompanied by a projecting wing at the right-hand end (No. 5). The left-hand unit was originally a byre, altered and incorporated into the house. The rest of the main range has 20th-century bay windows at ground-floor level, a door between them, all set under a mono-pitched stone slate roof; a blocked window is positioned above the door, and there are 20th-century casement windows at the first floor. Stone copings are present on the left gable, along with a ridge chimney, and two other chimneys are located behind the ridge. The wing (No. 5) has a stone gable coping with kneelers, a large 20th-century casement window on each floor of the gable end, and similar casement windows in the two-bay return wall, as well as a door at the junction of the bays. It also features two ridge chimneys. A modern addition to the rear is not part of the listed building.
Internally, the buildings have been altered, but No.4 retains a timber-framed arcade partition between the house and the outshut in the second bay. This partition features two posts with high stone stylobates, an arcade plate, angle-braces, and light studs on a rail beneath the arcade plate. There's also an arched brick fireplace, which has been restored. No. 5’s wing contains an exposed king-post roof truss, though it has otherwise been altered. The property is of historical interest as the birthplace of Richard Bentley (1662-1742), a scholar and divine who served as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1700 to 1734.
