Description

Birkby Grange is a mid-18th century house constructed of hammer-dressed stone, situated on Birkby Hall Road. The house has a pitched stone slate roof with coped gables, cut kneelers, and ball finials. Five ranges of casement windows with glazing bars are set in plain raised surrounds. The front door has an oblong fanlight with glazing bars, contained within a moulded stone surround of the Wilton type, featuring a pulvinated frieze and cornice. The east end features two ranges of casement windows with glazing bars, and a Venetian window with Gothic glazing bars above at attic level. The west end has a Diocletian window with glazing bars at attic level, and a two-storey extension with a glazed loggia on the south side, incorporating four columns that appear to be either 18th or 19th century in date.
