Description
Birkby Lodge is a mid-19th century building constructed of ashlar with a hipped slate roof, standing two storeys tall. The left side features a shallow two-storey canted bay, while the front has three ranges of sash windows. The entrance door is set in a porch supported by Tuscan pilasters and accessed by a flight of steps adorned with vase-shaped balusters and a moulded handrail. To the right, there is an additional range of sash windows that is slightly set back. This section was internally remodelled by the Manchester architect Edgar Wood in 1901, with further alterations occurring approximately 15 years later. Externally, Wood's work includes a flat-roofed oblong projection on the east side, which is unornamented and features a row of nine small oblong lights with lead glazing bars, two on each end elevation.
Inside, the hall appears to be part of the 1901 redecoration, showcasing simple oak wainscotting with tapering pilasters. A round-arched doorway is highlighted by an exaggerated plaster keystone and flanked by art nouveau ornament. The imposts are carved with art nouveau rose designs. The door features stained glass panels depicting figures outlined by the frame, art nouveau foliage, and the phrases "Welcome Ever Smiles" and "Farewell Goes/Out Sighing" in art nouveau typography.
