Description
Nos 10, 12, and 14 on Church Street are a pair of houses and a cottage built in 1692, with a slightly later rear wing. The buildings are constructed from deeply coursed millstone grit and feature a plinth and a continuous drip moulding above the ground floor openings. The stone slate roof has chamfered gable copings supported by carved kneelers, and there is a large central ashlar stack with a moulded string.
The facades of Nos 10 and 12 were originally symmetrical, with a central door that has a moulded surround and a deep lintel inscribed with "H.I.E. 1692." Above the door is an elliptical light with a drip mould. On either side of the doorway are former 6-light double chamfered stone mullioned and transomed windows, both of which have been altered; the left window has had a doorway inserted. No 14 originally had a 4-light window, which has also been altered, with an entrance to the left. On the first floor, there are six former cross windows, now each replaced with a single sash window.
At the rear, No 14 has a two-storey wing with one bay, featuring two, three, and four-light double chamfered stone mullioned windows, one of which was originally transomed but has been altered. There are two original entrances, one with a moulded surround, an arched head, and a circular light above in a false arch. The former gable of the wing, now internal, has two small lights at attic level, one of which is circular and has a chamfered surround.
