Description

Hawthorn House is a house and cottage that has been combined into one dwelling, dated 1741 with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed square stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and three first-floor windows, with quoins. The left end is covered by a two-storey pent-roofed addition that includes a doorway on the right side and a first-floor window at the junction with the main range. To the right of this addition, there are three windows on each floor, which were originally four-light windows but have been altered to two-light windows, all with plain stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions. There is a doorway to the right of the central window, which has a plain stone surround and a date plaque above it. An oval window is located on the first floor between the left-hand windows. The building features a shaped kneeler and coping to the right, with chimney stacks on the ridge between the left-hand windows and at the right end. The right return has a blocked four-light first-floor window and a single-light window in the gable. Inside, there are re-used beams in the right-hand first-floor window. The house was possibly built for the Leigh family, who occupied it from at least the 1760s until 1883.
