Description
Nos. 12 and 16, Magdale, are a late 18th-century building that was originally Upper Steps Mill, and has been converted into three dwellings, now two. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with quoins, and has a stone slate roof, hipped to the south which may be a later alteration. It features gable copings on moulded kneelers, and moulded stone brackets.
No. 12 has a symmetrical west facade of three bays, with a central doorway above which is a two-light window, and three-light windows to either side. No. 16 was formerly used for manufacturing and has a large carriage entrance, now part blocked, on both the east and west sides. The south side of No. 16 has large two-light windows at ground and first floor level, and an altered two- and three-light stone mullioned window on the second floor. A single-storey extension on the west side is of later date and of no architectural interest. The south elevation presents a continuous twelve-light stone mullioned window at second floor level, adjacent to a recent single-storey extension. The north gable of No. 12 has a central blocked doorway with two-light windows on either side. The building has historical significance as the site of the first Sunday School in Honley, which was held there in 1790. This is documented in 'The History of Honley' by M. A. Jagger, published in 1914.
