Description
Rawthorpe Old Hall is a building that dates from the 16th or 17th century, although it may have medieval origins. In the 15th century, it was owned by Henry Longley or Langley, who was the brother of Cardinal Thomas Longley, Bishop of Durham, and served as Lord Chancellor to Kings Henry IV and Henry V. The building features hammer-dressed stone and a pitched stone slate roof.
The central hall range is one storey with an attic, flanked by two wings that are each two storeys high. Most of the windows and doors are modern, but there is a notable door leading to the screens passage at the west end of the hall range, which has a 4-centred arch with a plain chamfer. A corresponding door in the porch at the north end of the passage features a plain chamfered lintel.
On the west side of the west wing, there is a projecting chimney breast, while the first floor of the west wall of the east wing is slate hung on a timber frame and has a coved eaves. The east wall of the east wing is made of handmade red brick and includes a single 3-light stone mullioned window. Additionally, there are stables and outhouses located to the north of the east wing.
