Description

Birkby Junior School is a late 19th-century building constructed from rock-faced stone. It features a half-hipped slate roof adorned with numerous barge-boarded and elaborately timber-framed gables that rest on coved jetties. The school has one-storey wings and a central two-storey block that is inscribed "Hillhouse Board School." Access to this block is via a flight of balustraded stone steps leading to the first floor.

A prominent three-storey tower is part of the design, featuring a pointed arched entrance on the ground floor that is inscribed "Infants." The tower is topped with a machicolated parapet and an intricately designed bell tower that has clocks on all four sides and a tall octagonal slated spire. Most of the windows are casements set within chamfered surrounds and include mullions. Notably, the first-floor window in the central block and the second-floor window in the tower both have transoms.

The windows in the gabled sections of the wings are enhanced with trefoiled relieving arches above them, along with rose windows featuring plate tracery, all set within pointed relieving arches. There is also a lower one-storey extension to the west, which has a pointed arched doorway inscribed "Boys." Additionally, there is an extension at the rear built on an undercroft, which contains pointed arched windows and was formerly the Girls' School.
