Description
The Woollen Mill belonging to Messrs Gledhill Brothers and Holmes is located on Laund Road in Salendine Nook. The building dates from the 18th century at the west end and the 19th century at the east end. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a pitched stone slate roof with coped gables. The mill has two storeys and includes five ranges of industrial windows. There is a first-floor door with six moulded panels accessed by cantilevered stone steps. Inside, there are remains of a brick kiln, with the base of a chimney protruding outside, made of red brick and featuring a moulded stone plinth to the stack. This mill was previously the pottery of the Morton family, who were potters in the area since the late 16th century. For more information on the Mortons, see Salendine Nook Baptist Chapel.
